In 2006, founder and CEO, Bill Borg, knew the marketing world was about to change. The proliferation of communities between 2000 and 2006 was especially intense in the Carolina Mountains. Companies were emulating the big developers and in the end a homogenization occurred; communities were drowning in 'the sea of sameness' with similar product offerings, communications, even using the same photography. And for good or bad, caught up in the momentum of the early 2000's (good old days) the majority of communities across all categories were doing well.
As the marketplace became more challenging it became clear that many developments had little brand differentiation, poorly thought out sales sequencing with sales forces that had gotten "soft", and in many cases no core story behind their look alike brand initiatives. He made it a habit to ask companies "what's your story?" and in most cases was returned the deer in the headlights blank stare. The strategic story-central in building the right brand had been overlooked.
The Question Became: If you don't know what your story is…..why would you ever expect the public to get it, embrace it, plug into it, trust it, and want to share your story with others? The faith based buyer had left the room and without a compelling story, well told and properly communicated, the public might be initially impressed but in the end would take a pass.
Bill had a revelation about the foundational importance of a company's core story…its soul…its survival, and a vision of an innovative company that would bring together a collaboration of highly evolved professionals who had in their own right set themselves apart from the pack and understood the importance of "story". So he sold his interests and shut down other creative companies and morphed them into StoryPowered.
